Osaka is a historic land that its history has stretched for almost 1400 years, the land has not only been admired by people from all around the world but it has also been loved and admired by the Japanese people as well. Osaka has been known as the city of water because the land is facing The Seto Inland Sea, and that is where numerous rivers meet. Because multiple rivers surround the city, it has become a crucial spot for shipping since ancient times. This has opened the gates for foreign trade for Osaka, and the port that opened in the 5th century that is located around Chou Ward in Osaka city, has served as the primarily location where various goods are imported to Japan.

  • The origins of Osaka are tracked back to the fifth century. During this time, Osaka became the economic and political heart of Japan. It is around the time of the fifth century where Buddhism began its spreading in Japan. As Buddhisim was spreading across the nation, in 593 Prince Shotoku erected Shitenno-Ji Temple in modern day Tennoji-ku. With all of these developments, Osaka transformed into an international city engaged in exchange with other Asian nations. In 645, Emperor Kotoku moved the capital from Nara to Osaka. The palace that he lived in still exists and you can take a tour of the palace that he built, over at the remains of Naniwa no Miya Palace Park. This palace is considered to be Japans oldest imperial palace.

In Osaka, one of the most renowned structures is the Osaka Castle. This castle was built in the late 16th century by the Japanese legend Toyotomi Hideyoshu, after he defeated the Jodo Shinshu Buuddhist sect and united the feudal lords. This iconic castle has become one of the countries most visited landmarks and a major part of Osakas history. This iconic Japanese landmark is famous for its massive granite stone walls.

Another significant landmark in Osaka is the Shitennoji Temple. This is japans oldest religious structure, and it has attracted a constant number of pilgrim’s and worshippers. This old temple was founded almost 1400 years ago by Prince Shotoku, who is believed to have introduced Buddhism to Japan. The temple has been destroyed many times, but has been rebuilt as the 6th century original.
